Bakuchiol vs. retinol: what the clinical evidence actually shows

Bakuchiol has been marketed as a 'natural retinol alternative' for years — here's what separates a defensible comparison from a marketing claim.

Bakuchiol, extracted from Psoralea corylifolia, has become a popular ingredient in anti-aging formulations positioned as a gentler alternative to retinol. Unlike retinoids, bakuchiol does not appear to share the same irritation profile, which has made it attractive for sensitive-skin formulations and daytime use.

The comparison is strongest on tolerability, not necessarily on speed or magnitude of effect — retinol has a much longer clinical track record. A defensible formulation claim distinguishes between 'retinol-like benefits with better tolerability' and a blanket 'more effective than retinol' statement.

Purity matters here more than most formulators assume: a 99% HPLC-purity, CO₂-extracted bakuchiol behaves far more predictably in a formulation than a crude extract with variable bakuchiol content, particularly for stability and dose-response consistency.
