Bakuchiol

Bakuchiol is a meroterpene phenol extracted from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia (bakuchi), studied as a natural, retinol-like active for anti-aging skincare formulation.

// Chemistry

Bakuchiol is structurally unrelated to retinoids (vitamin A derivatives) despite sharing some functional effects on skin — its retinol-like activity comes from a different molecular mechanism, which published research suggests is part of why it doesn't share retinoids' typical irritation profile.

// Mechanism & pharmacology

Published gene-expression research found that bakuchiol modulates many of the same genes involved in extracellular-matrix and dermal-epidermal-junction maintenance as retinol does, supporting its function as a retinol-like compound. Separately, bakuchiol has been studied as an antioxidant (found in one review to be up to 60-fold more effective at inhibiting squalene oxidation than tocopherol) and as an anti-acne and antimicrobial active.

// Extraction & standardization

Bakuchiol is CO₂-extracted from Psoralea corylifolia seeds and purified to a guaranteed 99% purity, verified by HPLC.

// Applications
  • Anti-aging serums and creams
  • Retinol-alternative formulation for sensitive-skin products
  • Anti-acne formulation
