Gingerol & Shogaol
Gingerol and shogaol are the two principal bioactive compounds in ginger (Zingiber officinale) — related molecules with distinct, complementary effects, both standardized in Arceli's GingActive™ and GingActive+™ technologies.
Gingerol (specifically 6-gingerol) is the pungent compound present in fresh ginger. When ginger is dried or heated, gingerol undergoes a dehydration reaction that converts it into shogaol (6-shogaol) — a related but structurally distinct compound. This is why fresh ginger and dried ginger have different pungency profiles and, in published research, different biological activity.
Published research on 6-gingerol points to digestive, circulatory and mild anti-fatigue effects, while 6-shogaol is more associated with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, metabolic and cognitive effects (including modulation of NF-κB signaling and pro-inflammatory cytokines in in-vitro models). Because the two compounds have different pharmacological profiles, the ratio between them — not just total content — matters for how a ginger extract performs in a given application.
Standardized ginger extracts are typically produced via CO₂ extraction to preserve the compound profile, followed by purification and standardization to fix the gingerol:shogaol ratio to a guaranteed specification, rather than leaving it to vary with raw-material growing conditions and harvest timing.
